Abstract

A simple device for measuring linear dimensions consisting of a commercially available electronic calliper rule with an interface, a personal computer and a self designed software is described. For the special application to seedling-length measurement in vigour testing the use of the calliper in connection with a carriage and a computer program facilitating simultaneous seedling evaluation and length measurement is described. By using this device about 65 % of analyst-time can be saved compared to measuring by hand with recording the data on a paper sheet followed by data input in a personal computer. When measuring linear dimensions in various other areas of seed research, time-saving of at least 50 % is achieved.
