The routine determination of seeds of another species in a seed lot is one of three important tests which have to be performed according to the International Seed Tes-ting Association before a seed lot is allowed by law to be placed on the market. Up to now this determination is performed by hand which is very time consuming and particularly costly. Thus, we want to give a quality standard how precise a machine has to work regarding the determination of other seeds. Hence, the different combinations of main seed component species and other seed species were grouped in the three classes ‘easy’, ʻmoderate’ and ‘difficult’ according to the difficulty of sorting them out, i.e. the recovery rate of the other seeds in the main seed species component. Quantiles and confidence limits assuming a beta-binomial distri-bution were calculated by using this grouping structure and empirical data of proficiency tests. For example, the median recovery rate in the class ‘easy’ is 94%, whilst it is 83% in the class ‘moderate’ and 41% in the class ‘difficult’. The beta-binomial one-way 10% confidence border would be a recovery rate of 78% in the class ‘easy’ whilst it would be 53% in the class ‘moderate’ and 2% in the class ‘difficult’.
